Mention (@) another user in a comment

Issue: users want the option to have a way of informing other users that they are talking directly to them in the comments section.

Possible solution: allow @mention in a comment that will fire off a PM to the user with a link to the comment.

I'd suggest it be a notification than a PM though.

From someone who gets a ton of notifications, notifications are easy to get lost in the sea of them. Perhaps if @mentions had their own type of notification?

@ChristopherN4G: You're a special case in that regard, though. I'm not sure how much extra work it'd take for a different type of notification, but as long as it keeps within the same aesthetic as standard replies anyone receives.

PMs do just fine serving their function already, so I don't like the look of muddying them up with "you were @ mentioned here!" auto-messages.

@coolbeans: I mean, I also get tons more PMs than normal. PMs don't get "read" automatically when you go to the page like notifications and you can delete them. But I get your point. I just think the notification system only leads to the potential to miss a lot of mentions. Especially on hot topics.

This is a big one, as a community we often tend to use @ in the comments section already so it would be even better if it actually pinged the user.

I agree. This is an expectation in modern chat formats.
